Nick Krall's Ascension: From GM to President of Baseball Operations for the Surging Reds
Krall's tenure included a challenging rebuilding phase in the previous year
In a surprising turn of events during the 2023 season, the Cincinnati Reds emerged as surprise contenders. Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, Nick Krall, who had served as the general manager since 2018 and head of baseball operations since October 2020, was promoted to the prestigious role of president of baseball operations. This promotion was well earned and a testament to his dedication and vision for the team.
Simultaneously, Brad Meador, the Assistant GM, was elevated to the position of Senior Vice President and GM, marking a significant stride in his career. This duo brought fresh perspectives to the organization and will look to build upon the progress already made.
These promotions added a layer of stability to the club, which had earlier signed Manager David Bell to a three-year extension in July.
Krall's tenure included a challenging rebuilding phase in the previous year, characterized by trades involving several veterans. The result was a crop of promising rookies and prospects, both on the Major League roster and in the Minor Leagues. The Reds' surprising performance in 2023 was underpinned by the emergence of 16 Major League debutants, including top prospects Elly De La Cruz, Matt McLain, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Brandon Williamson, and Noelvi Marte.
Regarding the division of responsibilities, the changes won’t be dramatic. It’s about getting Meador more involved with the Major League team and disperse some other things at the minor league levels.
Krall, 45, boasts an impressive 21-year journey within the Reds' organization, beginning in 2003 when he was hired to oversee advance scouting preparation. Over the years, he climbed the ranks, from assistant director of baseball operations to director of baseball operations and assistant GM. His promotion to general manager on May 10, 2018, was a significant milestone, and in October 2020, he assumed the role of head of baseball operations while retaining his GM title.
Meador, at 48, has dedicated 14 years to the organization, with his last two as Vice President and Assistant GM. His prior experience as the director of amateur scouting and oversight of the MLB Draft showcased his ability to identify and nurture talent. Before joining the Reds' scouting department in 2009, he spent a decade at the University of Cincinnati as a recruiting coordinator and associate head coach.
The Reds, under the leadership of Krall and Meador, are poised for an exciting future.
